Some Things

Last night Marie and I went to see a live recording of Call Your Girlfriend. It was great and we realized we were so old when she read the fine print and it was doors at 7, show at 8. Questions: Would we need coffees to survive? Answer: Yes. Would we ever get to fall asleep? Answer: We actually made it back to the suburbs by 9:55 PM (NOT THAT WE WERE KEEPING TRACK). We also got to grab dinner before and tried poke bowls for the first time and those were pretty great. Would eat again.

That capped off a long week last week with Marcus’ business trip, and then a weekend that also included a family party, a tot-Halloween party with my sorority sisters, and a baby shower.

It has been…a lot.

But. Back to the coffee thing! This was also my first afternoon coffee in…a month. (1) That latte tasted GOOD. (2) I am glad I didn’t get the extra shot of espresso. (3) It destroyed my sleep as expected. I will be muscling through this afternoon sans-coffee and I know going to bed tonight will be a collapse into bed-style experience.

On the topic of sleep I have forgotten to mention that In August I stopped looking at my phone in bed when the lights are off. Another thing I have not missed at all and another thing I think has been helping me to sleep better.

We are now getting ready for another three days of very aggressive Halloween celebrating. We’re going to an office party with the kids this afternoon, tomorrow is Wear Your Costume To Music Class Day and a party with my playgroup, and then there is you know…actual Halloween.

Marcus went on a business trip this week and didn’t get home until Thursday so I lived off the land. AKA on leftovers and on salad kits and on leftover pizza.

Some Things

What a weekend.

We had a much needed date night at Bellecour, took the kids out for donuts at YoYo Donuts on Sunday morning, and had afternoon playdates with friends. Had Shabbat dinner on Friday night, spent time toddling around at Nana and Grandfather’s. I got to go out to brunch at a new-to-me restaurant with my sorority sisters and could anyone ask for anything more on a weekend? I think not.

This week and upcoming weekend are just going to be wildly busy so, I am gearing up to get through them.

As a final farewell to afternoon caffeine, I tossed out my (now) very old, mostly finished bottles of cold brew concentrate this week. The Sunday epsom salt soaks are still just the best and I don’t miss the two glasses of wine I dropped. I think I can officially say this is who I am now.

I am also apparently someone who burns candles now (?). Someday we will look back on this as a phase but for now, I will recommend the Fresh Balsam candle from Bath and Body Works (seriously). It smells like the Sugared Birch Hearth and Hand candle except like you can actually smell it. If you don’t like fresh, woods-y, eucalyptus-y scents I cannot help you.

If you listen to podcasts, episodes that have spoken truth into my life lately: Episode 40 of Forever 35, Episode 57 of Coffee and Crumbs, and Episode 30 of The Mom Hour Voices series. All of them had guests I had never even heard of before. After listening to them, I was very nearly compelled to listen to them again.

I made a slow cooker full of minestrone on Sunday so that we would have a few lunches each and that was a great life choice.

Tuesday – Crispy Skinned Chicken with Lemon Rosemary Pan Sauce from Cravings: Hungry for More, Garlicky Wilted Spinach, Roasted Potatoes

This chicken was AMAZING. Will make again.

Wednesday – Salmon, Veggie Couscous with Spicy Pine Nuts from Cravings: Hungry for More

The couscous was tasty but it required three dishes so it probably will not become part of the regular rotation.

Thursday – Coconut Short Rib Curry from Cravings: Hungry for More, Steamed Rice, Steamed Broccoli

Honesty: I made this in the slow cooker with a chuck roast.

Miscellaneous – Twitter (and Uncle Mike’s) Banana Bread from Cravings: Hungry for More

I made this with a can of pumpkin instead of banana because Mom is allergic and it still came out great. I also subbed half of the white sugar for brown. ALWAYS do this with quick breads. It is a great choice. Will make again soon.

Some Things

What a weekend. We kicked it off with Critter’s Friday afternoon request to get ice cream (I didn’t know he knew to ask?!) and then he and I went on an adventure just the two of us to Como Zoo. I was raised going there and it is 10 minutes closer to us than the Minnesota Zoo which is BIG TIME when you have littles that still nap. It is also the perfect size for small people and they can walk the whole time so I consider it to be the best possible zoo situation.

If ya missed my IG stories this weekend, some bonus content, the 11 day old baby giraffe.

Critter was as into it as I was so we just stood and stared for five minutes.

I am entering my third week of no caffeine in the afternoon and my fourth week of Less Wine. This all feels very normal now, but I also feel like I need (want?!) a latte so much but also don’t miss it.

I am also entering my third week of Epsom Salt Soak On Sunday Night and cannot recommend that one enough to this group. I know some people like to read in the bath or whatever but I just turn on some classical music and turn my mind OFF for 15-20 minutes and it is wonderful.

For this week’s egg roll adventure, we visited Wok in the Park and Critter also tried cream cheese puffs for the first time so that was a real thrill. Glitter did her best to scatter the egg roll filling she didn’t eat on the floor like confetti but overall it was a much better trip behavior-wise than last week so that was something.

I’m entering this week feeling the most relaxed I’ve been in the last few weeks and I hope you are all finding that space as well!

I made this in a slow cooker instead because it made more sense for our life and it turned out great.

Wednesday – Spice Rubbed Parmesan Chicken Breasts and Crispy Buffalo Smashies from Cravings: Hungry for More, Garlicky Wilted Spinach

I had to eat more buffalo potatoes because they are amazing. The chicken was great. I love that Chrissy suggested serving this with garlicky wilted spinach but I followed my own recipe instead of hers and called it a day.
