I hope that y’all understand that I can’t report on any sort of marathon training until I get home because I have no idea of how my mileage is going to shake out.
In the meantime, know that I DID pack my running gear in that tiny backpack I’m hauling across the continent because this is an opportunity not to be missed.
Insomuch as it is possible, I am continuing with marathon training while we are away. The first week’s numbers were not too bad – I’m supposed to hit 24 miles because it is the last week of mileage building.
BUT, the second week of our trip, I’m meant to log 39 miles which is a really big jump (not to mention the whole I Will Not Be At Home-thing). To be realistic, the last 8 miles will hit on the Sunday we are returning, so if they are getting logged, it will either be at 4:00 AM outside of the Reykjavik airport or at 8:00 or 9:00 PM in Minneapolis. I’m pretty much going to be playing that situation by ear.
The fun part (you know, once you get past all of that nasty planning!) is that I have the opportunity to run in some pretty cool places. I didn’t have to do a lot of planning when we went to Paris because I already knew that I wanted to run through Jardin du Luxemborg. Here, I managed to figure out that our hotel in Berlin is right on the Berlin Marathon course, and that our hotel in Reykjavik was .5 km from the bay in one direction and ~2 km from the ocean in the other direction.
As for Spain, it is going to be 90 degrees and I don’t know anything about what running there may or may not be like. Between the heat and the drunks in Pamplona, there may be more resting than running.
This is still vacation, after all.
