#reverb12 is a prompt-a-day series for the month of December that is meant to give us all the chance to reflect on 2012 and the opportunity to write down our hopes and dreams for the coming year. Through December 31st Meredith, Sarah and I will be posting each day with a new prompt. Join us by writing, or join us by reading. No matter what you choose, come with us.
Beautiful things: What brought beauty into your life this year? Was it a tangible thing or something intangible? Tell us about it in detail.
Sunrises. The waves on Big Pine Lake.
These are the moments and things that make my heart hurt.
Neither of them are different or special. Shiny or new.
They hold the sort of weathered, routine, familiar beauty that can only come from things that are impossible to own.
In a world where so much of what we purchase, give and receive is new, the same, mass-produced; it is nice to have these predictable things.
Nature is not a status symbol.
The sunrise greets me daily. And then a hundred times over on Instagram, Twitter and Facebook.
Thank God. The sun managed to rise again. they complain.
They saw the same one that I did on the other side of the city! I rejoice.
But at the lake I sit by myself on the dock for 15 minutes too long with my coffee just watching the water.
The waves ripple gently. My vigil is my own.
I look out to the place where the waves touch the trees and the trees touch the sky.
