An Act of Improvement

Up today: More baking treat-making.

Because it’s Saturday.  Because last Monday I brought Vegan cookies (which my co-workers gamely chowed down on) to work.  Because Marcus’ cousin dropped off this year’s order of cookies last week and in the process of stashing them away, I discovered that we had three sleeves of Thin Mints in the freezer from last year.

I’ll be honest.  I think most Girl Scout Cookies are flavorless.  Maybe once upon a time they really were good or all of the other cookies you could buy at the store were that bad.  Maybe my palate has changed.  It’s anyone’s guess.

On that note, I’ll say that the Caramel DeLites (Samoas) have been my favorite since I was a pup, and that I’ve been known to down a Do Si Do or two before a run because they do not upset my stomach.

And then there’s that whole thing where I hate wasting food.  Yes, that.

So after I got done lunching, I whipped up a batch of Thin Mint Truffles.

Gorgeous, no?  There’s just something about draping things in chocolate and almond bark shells that’s just so aesthetically pleasing to these eyes of mine.

Probably because like wearing the color black, it’s just so darned forgiving.

I didn’t consult The Internet before making them, so I was more than a little bit nervous before I bit into my first one.  Sometimes it’s hard to know how these things will turn out.

The verdict?  Beyond the fact that they sit in your stomach like a rock (hard-boiled eggs watch out!) they are A Major Improvement over the original.  And I might be so bold as to say that I liked them even more than Oreo Truffles.

Buy a box and make them happen.

  1. Probably had something to do with some day-after 13 mile hungries, but today I bought a box of Samoas outside the grocery store today.

  2. Oh, those look lovely. I bet they taste a lot better than thin mints too.
    I love Girl Scout cookies, but only one kind: Tagalongs. I love those little peanut butter suckers! The rest of my family adores Samoas, but I don’t care for them. Thin mints are eh too.
    Well, mint as a dessert flavor has never really been my thing. Something that’s in the same flavor category as my toothpaste doesn’t scream dessert.

  3. The truth is that I am not a fan of Girl Scout Cookies. Not sure why but they just seem a bit tasteless to me. This may be the first time we are not on The Same Page. I hope you can forgive me for that.

    The truffle are gorgeous indeed! A well spent Saturday if you ask me. 🙂

  4. My favorite part of this post is where you called them Caramel Delites. Which is their real name.
    I wasn’t going to buy any cookies this year (I’m just at the point at which they aren’t worth the money and the crap on the ingredient list), and then The Husband not only went and got six boxes but introduced HRH to them. He’s basically in the doghouse for forever now.

  6. I’m positive that I have a few boxes of Thin Mints lurking in the back of the extra freezer. I used to like them frozen, but they are pretty tasteless, so I’m not sure why I ever thought ice storage made it all better. Perhaps it is living in a Nut Free house, but I will wrestle a box of Tag-a-Longs out of anyone’s hands. Peanut butter & chocolate gets me every time.

  7. My favorite are the Samoas too. My kids and husband like the thin mints. I can bake much tastier treats but we always end up getting suckered into buying them from those cute little girls. It’s for a good cause.
