Mother Nature vs. Pop Culture

Before we get down to business, a few of you have been asking about what kind of planner I carry.  I got a myAgenda by momAgenda.  If you want to see a snap of what it actually looks like in the flesh, check this post out.

I got the desktop size, which is an absolute beast.  So if you were to size-down (provided your handwriting isn’t especially loopy) I’m sure you would be more than happy.

So, there’s that.

Confession: When I found out that the Real Housewives of Beverly Hills would be coming back in September, I practically jumped for joy.  I missed those girlfriends.

They keep it real with their Calypso-St. Barth’s frock/tunic arrangements, spa days and the glasses of wine that they NEVER seem to finish.  Toss in a pair of Kendra Scott earrings and they’re ready to roll.

They keep me grounded, kittens.

And after that brief wave of jewel-toned nostalgia, I realized that September is almost…uncomfortably close.

The light is starting to change, for crying-out-loud.  My evidence?

An epic craving for canned pumpkin.

Yes, I have a giant can stashed away in the pantry from last fall.  No, I won’t be taking it out just yet.

I feel like we’ve only just entered the part of the Minnesota summer where we can FINALLY eat our own sweet corn like it’s going out of style (it is).  I refuse to give that up.  You have nothing on me, Mother Nature.

But it’s kind of on the same level as that one time last March where I couldn’t stop eating sweet potatoes.

Not good.

So to embrace the last month of summer, I sourced  new wallpaper for my phone.

I know most people do something a little bit more low-key.  Like tan.  Wear swimsuits.  Mow the lawn.  Eat popsicles.  Make popsicles.  Seek shelter.

I needed something that came with a little less commitment.

As it turns out, less commitment actually looks a little bit garish.

But I’m still obsessed.

I will say that even though Dandelions are Hell On Earth as far as keeping a well-manicured lawn, the way their seeds waft around at the end of the summer is one of the prettiest sights.

You know, once you get over the fact that you’re basically watching an invasion take place.

Have you had any unseasonal cravings lately?

I’ve also been dying to braise various cuts of meat with a ferocity usually reserved for buttercream frosting.  Where on earth is my head at, right?

What shows are you looking forward to watching this fall?

I’m also looking forward to the return of Boardwalk Empire on HBO as well as the beginning of a few new shows on the Food Network.

  1. I am super excited for Zooey Deschanel’s new show. She is so great. Otherwise I can never get enough of Modern Family. I would be ok if that was on every night of the week.

    • I’m excited about “The New Girl,” too. Zooey Deschanel is adorable and it looks really funny. I have been won over by the relentless marketing. 🙂

  2. yes for real housewives of BH!! I loved them the most i think. I only watch bravo, regis and kelly and food network.

  3. I cannot wait for all my fall sitcoms to return – 30 Rock, Modern Family, Big Bang Theory. Sadly, I don’t think the shows come back until late September or October. I tried Boardwalk Empire, but I could not get into it. Maybe I will try again.

  4. Is there ever a time of year when craving chocolate is out of season?

Can’t wait for The Good Wife to start back up.

  5. I had to laugh when you mentioned pumpkin. I just made muffins this weekend. Couldn’t take it any more. I needed a pumpkin fix. They were good, and super easy – one Devil’s Food cakemix, one standard size can of pumpkin, 1 cup of chocolate chips. Mix the dry cakemix and the pumpkin together. Stir in the chocolate chips. Bake. Done. Yummy.

PS – I’m waiting for Dexter to come back this fall. I’m addicted.

  6. OMG I’ve been craving fried foods in an unhealthy way – fall is definitely upon us. And Pumpkin – where’d I be without Pumpkin!!
As for shows…since I lack anything but the most barebones of cable packages, I’m settling for NCIS making a comeback, and The Big Bang Theory. Yup – I’m lame.

  7. I ALWAYS crave pumpkin! It’s by far my favorite food. I usually eat it year round, but to make it more special, I’ve sworn it off until September 1st. Then, I’ll crack it open and bake pumpkin bread 🙂 I can’t wait!

  8. I am DYING for good corn. I feel I have a sense about these things. And I know it’s just not there yet. And bad corn is just soooo devastating b/c I wait for it ALL YEAR.

I’ve still been able to find pumpkin at Target and I still love me a pumpkin muffin, no matter what the season.

Scott can eat beef stew all season. Like he just made a batch and he and Wee ‘Burb chomped it. I just can’t. Stews are soooo January winter depression.

  9. To each her own seasonal food craving, right? I still can’t wait for blackberries, and they’re finally almost here!
As for shows, I can’t wait for Community and Raising Hope to be back.

  10. Honest to God it took everything in my power not to make a pumpkin coffee cake the other day. I can’t wait for the return of Parenthood, the new show Whitney, and for the first time in a long time, a few new Food Network shows. I can’t wait to miss the new Charlie’s Angels.

  11. Thanks for the planner link. I might put that on the birthday wishlist. 🙂
