All-Carb Weekend

Kittens, this weekend has been an all-carb one.

Usually this is the part where I would say, I kid!  Or make some crack about Thanksgiving coming early.  The reality?  It’s mid-March and sometimes instead of letting the train run over you, you have to jump on.

Oh, how I jumped.

On Friday we did a tasting  for the Groom’s Dinner that ended up being more feast-y and less sample-y (read: lasagna, penne with white + red sauce!, blueberry tiramisu and flourless chocolate torte).  Saturday?  We journeyed to Edina for a cupcake tasting at Sweet Retreat.  We ALL know how that goes.  I probably had three cupcakes.

Sorry for partying.

And today, for Purim (it’s on March 19th this year) we baked Hamantaschen.

Apparently our mission was to bake ~22 dozen cookies.

So, totally no big deal.

Lord help me.

A simple pictorial step-by-step:

The filling. You can stuff them with whatever, really. But we go the chopped-dried fruit route. And the occasional peanut butter and chocolate chip route.

The staging area. Thank God for granite countertops.

Ready for the oven. The nice part about baking these things? They don't really spread and they nest oh-so-well.

The finished product. Obviously brushing them with an egg wash wasn't our numero uno priority.

Beyond the two that I snarfed while we were there, I brought home another 12 (half of which ended up in the freezer).

Nothing is safe anymore.

The good news about an all-carb weekend?  99.9% of the time they’re relaxing as hell.  You had better believe that I read the latest copy of ELLE, did some fairly focused de-cluttering, and napped like it was going out of style.

All-carb weekends: Do you find them relaxing or no?

What do you do when you’re coming off of an all-carb weekend?

I usually go for a heavy dosing of green tea (check!), something spicy (check!) and as many veggies (check!) as I can round-up in one go.

  1. I had an all-cake weekend- it was my dad’s birthday and ughhhh, I totally overate 😦 As in, I ate more yesterday than I ate all week!

I started my morning with a green smoothie- it helped me feel a little better.

  2. I feel like I’ve had an all-carb couple of weeks. When I’m sick, I’m all about toast, cereal, and bananas – okay, and chocolate. I think it’s time to back away from the CHO’s, though, now that I’m feeling better! I’ll be focusing on getting in lots of salads, protein at snacks, and avoiding chocolate.

And I’m intrigued by the idea of blueberry tiramisu. I assume it was delish.

  3. I had such a dumb tame food weekend b/c I’m all accountable to my dietician now. BOO! I am so jealous of your cupcakes. I’ve never been to that place in Edina. My waistline thanks me.

I remain ever jealous of granite countertops.

  4. I had a carb weekend too! Fuji Ya for dinner last night and Cafeteria for breakfast this morning. Tomorrow begins the change… Lots of water and organic fruits and veggies 🙂

  6. I definitely do the veggies and green tea…they make me feel like a million bucks no matter what the circumstances. And yes, Elle and carbs go together like peanut butter and jelly!

  7. Those cookies look delicious!! After a carb-heavy weekend, I usually down water like it’s going out of style!

  8. Oh my goodness, that is a lot of cookies. Nicely done!
After a super carby weekend, I try and get more protein and veggies in for the week.
Carby weekend are usually pretty nice for me because they’re usually for celebrations and family hanging out.

  9. Wait. You had blueberry tiramisu? That doesn’t sound like it should even be legal. Just about every weekend in carb heavy, which I remedy with vegetable infusions during the week. Balance is key.

  10. all carbs weekend, is there any other kind? 🙂 i like to come down with lots of veggies and extra long runs, but it usually takes a few days to feel normal again. ah…but all carb weekend is SO good in the moment….

  11. I feel so heavy but I’ve been on all carbs since Saturday. I’ll get back to protein shortly.

  12. I love carbs…have been craving linguine with clams, garlic, butter, and white wine. Oh, and a splash of parsley.
